Two Upcoming Training Opportunities
Opportunity 1 - Small Town & Merchant Workshop

Join us at this free workshop on Thursday, May 13, 8 – 10 am at the South Boston Council Chambers, 502 Yancey Street.

Independent retailers and restaurants are the heart and soul of small towns and Main Streets across Virginia. Successful retailers build vibrant downtown destinations, but they face unique challenges.

The speaker, Mr. Marc Willson, brings 35 years of experience to bear helping retail, restaurant and tourism-related small businesses refine and promote their concepts to the public. In 1975, Marc started his retail career as co-owner of the largest distributor of Earth Shoes in the U.S. Since then he has held executive positions with retailers such as Britches of Georgetown, Crown Books, Circuit City, The Bicycle Exchange, Escampus.com and Storetrax, Inc. Marc joined the SBDC in 2009 as a Retail Industry Consultant.

To register for this seminar please call 434-572-3085 or e-mail [email protected]. Sponsored by the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce and the Longwood Small Business Development Center.

Opportunity 2 - QuickBooks Workshop

Is your small business (or church or non-profit) interested in learning about an easy way to track and maintain your business’s financial health? The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is having a QuickBooks Financial Software Workshop, 2 (3-hr) sessions on May 11 & 13 for beginners and May 18 & 20 for intermediate users. Both sessions are 6-9 pm and cost is $70.

QuickBooks allows you to quickly pay bills, to effortlessly create invoices, to easily generate easy-to-read financial reports, and to stay on top of incoming receipts and outgoing payments.

Happenings at the SVHEC
Grandfather Trophy Clock Project

Students in the WoodLINKS/Product Design & Development program at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) have designed, engineered, and manufactured a traditional grandfather trophy clock for the Martinsville Speedway.

Much of the beauty of the clock is in the painstaking details that pay respect to the region’s past. The students built the clock using 100+ year-old hard pine salvaged from the American Tobacco Warehouse.

The finished product is an original, collaborative work of art that showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage and history, and that we are proud to say was produced in Halifax County.

For more information, visit www.svhed.org or contact Communications Manager Hope Harris-Gayles at [email protected] or 434-572-5446.
